Project Overview:

The Zorgol Khairkhan (ZKH) Archaeological Project was created in 2024 to investigate the region of Zorgol Khairkhan, a sacred mountain with a freshwater spring located in Tuv province, Mongolia. The ZKH project employs a variety of different investigation techniques including drone photography and mapping, pedestrian survey, and excavation. Our international team made up of professors, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students brings together an interdisciplinary skillset in GIS, bioarchaeology, isotope analysis, zooarchaeology, ceramic analysis, and more! While different team members have specific research focuses, one of the larger goals of the project is to investigate gender roles in pastoral nomadic societies broadly and the specific ways that they shaped/were shaped by shifts in political authority from the first mobile state, the Xiongnu (ca. 250 BCE – 200 CE), to the Mongol Empire (1206-1368 CE).
